Here is a ok examples of what i hear from the recon3d. The sound comming from the recon3d sounds alot better and not nearly as hollow. This is old hardware on computer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqqiIR017SQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6G7JR2Kfnc
crazy pilot there is not not a actual speaker on your head, its virtual speaker. if you cant hear it then you cant hear it. lunatiik the onboard processor does all the work. the only thing it needs form the console is usb power.

You don't understand me. I have a sound card with 3D sound.

3D sound is old and not used anymore for a reason. It simply makes the game sound bad and over exaggerate certain sounds.

Thats why i suggested it to astro. They have a expertise for audio. They could perfect it.

Dolby Digital Live is what creates surround sound audio for games, as the audio is not a prerecorded track like in a movie.

I'm not going to argue further, but I personally believe that Creative is claiming more than they can warrant with 3D sound as they are still utilizing the exact same source audio. The 5.1 signal doesn't have any height cues, so processing that involves adding height using this information will be extremely imprecise.

Ok, but what about about this. Dolby Pro Logic IIz a dolby process which has height channels.

Indeed it does, and there are some audio formats which carry audio height information. However games do not currently output in these formats, and I wish they would.

3D sound just makes noises coming from behind you barely audible, making an illusion that it is right behind you .

If you ask me I can barely hear a diffrence between both of these gimmicks, except 3D sounds crews with your sounds and makes it sound almost unrealistic and cheap.

Nothing will ever beat a real 5.1 system, we're you can pin point where someone is.
Of course you can simulate 5.1 or 7.1 with only headphones. No matter how many speakers you could set up in a room, you only have two ears. With an understanding of how your brain perceives sound coming from different directions, an audio engineer would know how to manipulate 5 channels of audio to make those sounds come from the proper directions. And that's what the Mixamp does. It is engineered to take 5 channels of sound and make it so the sound is properly directional using 2-channel headphones.

This 3D sound, however, doesn't make sense. The OP said it was like having 128 speakers surrounding you. Well, I don't know of any source (DVD, Bluray, video game) that outputs 128 channel audio. It would be like upscaling a 480P game to 1080P. You're adding information that wasn't there in the first place, and that doesn't necessarily make it better

The first example you posted and the Astro Mixamp accomplish surround sound in the same way. I believe the Astro Mixamp uses Dolby Headphone technology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Headphone), which uses HRTF to create a "virtual soundstage" around your head.

That video shows the difference between one piece of audio software and a "generic" one, obviously with different quality results. But the idea behind the technology is the same as with the Astro Mixamp. And while it seems like you can tell a difference in height between sounds while watching the video, put on some headphones, start that first video you posted at the 1:15 mark, and close your eyes. Try to tell if the glowing purple item is above or below you. It's easy to pinpoint where it is behind or to the side of you, because there are channels of audio there to support it. But the above/below isn't clear, because since there is no channel that supports that information, the software can't properly simulate it.

    sorry to bump old thread.
This is the same issue with mine.
I wish someone at astro could give me an honest opinion or advice to fix this, or if this is how theyre suppose to sound.
