Weird Phasey/Echo sound when using with "Dolby Headphone" A40TR???

    Hi all,

Had my Astro a40tr's now for the PS4 since this past Wednesday (14th Oct) and I can't help but notice that whenever I use the Dolby Headphone feature and the ring goes red around the button, all of the audio has this phasey kinda echo sound to it, like there are two of the same things playing at the same time and not in sync or something it's hard to explain. Not just with one particular game or sound either, everything does it! Anyone else experiencing this with the TR's???? Or at least shed some light as to what's going on???
I have it set up correctly and I've checked time and time again. It's set to OPTICAL OUT and Dolby Digital 5.1ch with the Audio Format Bitstream (Dolby) so I just don't know what else to do.
Now here's the weird thing... When I set the Audio Format to LINEAR PCM. If i turn on Dolby Headphone, it doesn't have the phasey out of sync sound to it. How is this possible because I thought it needed to be on Bitstream (Dolby) for everything to work properly? Eveything else about this headset is amazing it's just this issue I cannot get my head around.:mad:

    Thanks, Ryan.

No one had this problem seriously?

    Hey Ryan,

That may just be down to the game and how it's using surround sound. When you set Bitstream to Linear PCM, you're making the game output audio naturally and that is only the front two channels which you can hear so in the case of shooting a gun for example, you only hear the gun and the audio in front of you and you may hear audio behind you but it's being outputted as if it was in front of you. When you enable Bitstream to Dolby, it then is able to output surround sound from your games so if you was to fire the same gun, you will hear that through the front channels and then may hear an echo of the gunshot bouncing of the walls behind you. It's all down the developer and how they implement it.

    Hi Mitch,

I've set it back to Bitstream Dolby and using the headset WITHOUT the Dolby Headphone feature on. When I turn ON the Dolby Headphone and the ring goes red, on about 7-8 games I've tried now, the audio has this weird phasey and delay sound to it like I've explained. Every sound, movement, gun shot, you name it, it does it. Is there no explanation for this at all? Surely not every developer has made the game this way.
Also quick question, when the red ring IS NOT lit up that's outputting 5.1 but when IT IS lit up that's 7.1 am I correct?

    Thanks, Ryan.

No. When the ring is NOT lit up (Dolby off) it is outputting "Stereo" sound meanwhile if the ring is in fact lit up (Dolby on) it is outputting 7.1 surround sound.

Thing is though, when it's off it's in 5.1
At least it sounds like it. Can hear directional sound clearly. Footsteps as if they are behind me in real life, things in the distance, gunshots in certain directions, dialogue etc etc
Infact it's better sound quality than when the Dolby Headphone (RED LIGHT ON) is in use!
I've just upgraded from the Tritton Pro+ 5.1 and when I'm using this when the red light is off I can most definitely say it's 5.1 sound. The quality of this a40 is so much better but in terms of surround red light on isn't great at all and has that weird sound I'm on about and off it's a lot better

All I'm wanting to know is why I'm getting this delayed echoey sound when using Dolby Headphone. It's really annoying because I wanna use the 7.1
I understand it's down to developers too and how the sound has been produced but I've honestly tried now 9 games and it's the same on every one. Even my friends can hear it.

    Hey RalexanderBoob,

When you have Dolby Headphone off, all the channels are combined together and played in a stereo configuration just like Linear PCM. When you have Dolby Headphone on, surround sound is then simulated through your headset so you can hear all eight channels around you in a 3D environment allowing you to tell where enemies are coming from. Some users prefer it on and some prefer it off which is why the option is there. It may be that you are used to hearing it in a certain way and it just sounds a little weird hearing it with Dolby Headphone but the more you game, the better it should become.

So with the Dolby Headphone off is it normal for it to be coming through as 5.1? Just because that's what it's doing is all. I can hear everything from every direction not stereo sounding at all where you wouldn't detect things coming around the corner or sneaking up from behind etc etc

    Hey Ryan,

When Dolby Headphone is off, there is no surround sound processing through your headset so even though all six channels are there, it will be played as a stereo format.

    Hi Mitch,

Yeah, I prefer it much more without the Dolby headphone on. That still doesn't explain this weird sound I'm experiencing though. As Ive said it's not present when I use PCM but that's only stereo which I'm aware of now, but in Bitstream Dolby and I do use Dolby Headphone feature I still have this same problem explained above.
Do you not have any suggestions as to anything I can do?

    Thanks, Ryan

Just to clarify, I only experience this phasey, echo sound when Dolby Headphone is ON. When turned OFF and in Stereo the sound is crystal. I've tried it on many many games and friends notice it too.

    Hey RalexanderBoob,

It may just be that you prefer stereo audio over surround sound audio. We give you the option which is why you're able to toggle Dolby Headphone on and off.

Hey, bumping this topic because I recently bought A40 TR's and am having the same problem where I am getting a reverb/echo effect when the Dolby 7.1 is ON (Red ring)

I'm hoping I have things set up incorrectly but this definitely does not sound right. I can definitely tell that it is surround sound, but it sounds like it is echoing twice with a short delay.

If anyone has any questions to my settings please ask, but this definitely shouldn't sound this way.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Just switched to the A40 tr from the A50 BB edition.

    Tried different eq's and stock.
Same problem its like a echo tin-can robotic ish noise attached to everything.
And wow are the a50's way more powerful sounding.

    Bump
Edit: Wanted to make it clear this is about the astro tr gen 2's
So from all my google-fu and research and countless forum complaints there is either something wrong with the hardware of the new mix amp tr's or the firmware or possibly the way sound outputs from the consoles. The its suppose to sound that way is bull. I use to be a home theater Tech and in my opinion and experience this not what surround sound is suppose to sound like.
Either way no real answer from Astro out there.

Also the xbox one Tr's/mix amp work with PS4 for mic/chat in PC mode as well. Even tho i have seen the official answer is no they wont because of a special chip Microsoft requires for usb chat and the Ps4 wont see the correct driver because its looking at the xbox driver. Either the engineers never thought to test this or its false information for whatever reason whether it be contracts or marketing.
So that hurts my confidence in a honest and educated resolution for the defect in this product.

I suggest anyone else having this type of issue to push that info to the first party company Astro is branding with whether it be PlayStation or Xbox heck even Treyarch and Activision.
Ring enough doorbells maybe we will get an answer.

Hey guys. After plugging in the optical cable it fixed this echo/phasey sound.

However now my voice is high pitched over the microphone and I can't mix voice+game together.

You win some, you lose some.

I'm having the same issue! The only way to get the sound to go away is by turning off the Dolby surround sound. I just bought these and they work great with my PC, however if I switch to PS4 they sound horrible. I'm coming from a pair of A50's that I gave to my wife as I don't need the wireless function and don't mind a cord. I know how astros are supposed to sound, this is WAY OFF! Has anyone found a fix for this yet??

Hi, I have recently purchased a set of A40 TRs, I'm having the same issue with the dolby surround. To say that this is normal is a blatant lie. This is unacceptable.
