Well when I play COD 4 I put the big knob all the way up and keep the little knob right in the middle. I can hear Dead silence very easy.

You're going to be going deaf in 5 years. I have mine about 65-70% and its already loud, I also have the mixing knob in the middle.

I usually keep the Master Volume knob at around 50% and depending if I need to hear the other players' voices I'lll adjust the Mixing knob accordingly.

There's no way to change the settings to hear foot steps or gun shots. What the mix amp allows you to do is change the Master Volume to the level your comfortable with (I choose around 40-45%), then the smaller knob allows you to chose balance. This gives you the ability to filter out the prepubescent kids filling your headset that are screaming about owning someone, or how someone must be modding because there's no way they could be killed.... and allows you to choose the ratio at which you hear game sound versus voice.

So really there is no option to change any settings to hear foot steps... its the ability to basically dial out the ambient noise caused by voice chat, and the ability to have a Master Volume knob where you can control how loud you need the game to be in a moments notice.
