I have heard that it is the best way to go, but im not exactly sure how it works and what it does. If someone would explain it to me that would be very helpful.

Hey TBurz,
The TOSLink Optical Cable is the best way to go for 5.1 Surround Sound.
Very simple. You connect one end of the Optical TOSLink Cable into the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3. Then the other end will connect into the Astro Gaming MixAmp. Like a standard lead. You will either need the Xbox 360 Component Cable (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Component-HD-AV-Cable/dp/B000B6MLPU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1265187537&sr=8-1) or if you are using HDMI, you will need the Xbox 360 HDMI Optical Bundle (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-HDMI-AV-Cable/dp/B000UODATY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1265187566&sr=1-1).
It transfers the 5.1 Audio via "Light Pulses" although the Light Pulses are that quick that a human eye will just see it like a red light.
Fun Fact - Did you know that TOSLink Cables are the shortened name for Toshiba-LINK Cables.
