This was asked in some of the youtube comments on the setup videos, even though this may not apply to all.

This is what I do until Microsoft makes a cable cheaper than $50 to do this.

I've seen that b4 and tried it. U get a lil interferance from the open case though. I don't know why bc it's just a plastic cover over the dock cable.

Hrm... Would this work?

Xbox ---> HDMI ---> HDTV

The TV has an optical out, which currently goes to a 5.1 surround system. Now if I got a optical splitter, then split the signal to both the 5.1 speakers, and the mixamp.

Or does it only decode straight from the Xbox?

My TV also has an optical out but it just doesnt sound as good/accurate when I use it. It sounds 10 times better if I go straight to the 360.

That's a good idea. But I personally use VGA so I don't really need to do that. Microsoft is always making ways for people to spend more money.

Although this thread was posted under the wrong forum...

I actually have this currently done. I did it about 2 months ago to be able to use my turtle beaches while still on HDMI quality.

So since I've never used component cables before (green, blue, red), would I go about plugging them in normally as well as my HDMI cable, then after connecting my optical cable to the 360, use the HDMI channel to play on?

Sorry if this confuses anyone, not to sure on how I would go about this, help is appreciated, Thanks in advance!

this guide does not work with the optical cable as the sound can only input out of one thing so if u want to listen to the sound out of ur tv and headset u will have to buy the microsoft hdmi adapter

A couple years ago when the Elite came out it was bundled with the official HDMI cable I believe (which also came with the audio dongle). This is now not the case as Pro, Elites and Special Editions just come with the component cable.

Because of the sizing of the component cable, if you try to plug it into the AV slot, you can not fit the HDMI cable in there as well, and vice versa. There is a mod where you take apart the shell of the plug, in order to make it fit, but do this at your own discretion.

The official audio dongle is basically a slimmed down component plug; without the video plugs or anything, just the 2 for the analog audio (red and white input) and a slot for optical. This slimmed down plug allowed the fit of an HDMI cable alongside the AV slot. It comes with the official microsoft HDMI cable that is now sold separately.
