I have the new 2011 and the older version and you can really tell the improvements.I mean bass is sweet,boom mic is awesome.It is just as good as the A30 to me just a little better in sound quality via games.But music,movies,etc the A30 which is what they are for.

After getting my 2011 version.Getting it at $20 is a steal.Definitely worth it.Gonna get one for my older version.

Yes you will... As of January 2011 the new 2011 edition are available for purchase I just ordered my A40 two days ago.

I guess what I'm really curious to know is what exactly separates the "official 2011 A40's" from the older A40's? If I purchase the $20.00 upgrade, does that make my older A40's identical to the A40's shipping now from Astro? Are there any technical differences between the older headsets and the "new" headsets?

The technical specifications of the A40s from launch till current would be the same. The only noticeable difference would be the new mic (less omni-directional, more bendable) and the new earpads (new material, better sound isolation (which provides better bass)). I'm sure there's always small components that have changed over the years due to the supply chain, but the main components have all remained the same.

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii duno about that :). It does explain it under the "learn more" about the a40s that goes into detail in explaining what's new on thease than the older a40s... Just sayin!
