Do I really have to buy a cord to use hdmi with my toslink cable?
I have someone telling me I need the Xbox 360 HDMI AV Cable?
Is this true?

There are work arounds, if your TV has an optical out signal. That signal should transmit at whatever input it's receiving (in this case, if it's receiving 5.1 sound from the HDMI cable connected to your Xbox, then it sends out at 5.1 as well into your mixamp).

If you don't hook it up this way, and still want to use an HDMI cable, then you would need to either do the Component Cable Hack (where you remove the grey casing of the component cable adaptor so that the HDMI cable and the component cable adaptor can be plugged into the Xbox at the same time. The component cable adaptor has the optical out on it.). The other option is buying the official Xbox 360 HDMI A/V pack. It has an adaptor that handles just the optical or RCA portion from the same port as the component cable adaptor.
