do i need an optic cable for a 40's and are they powered by the xbox 360 its self or are they battery????

The optical cable is used with the mixamp to provide 5.1 surround sound. It's not necessary but only optical can provide 5.1

The optic cable provides the best quality.The mixamp is powered by the 360 with a USB cable, can also be powered by a battery pack.

so yeh basically the optical cable provides the best audio feed from the 360.

With the optical cable plugged in to the 360, will it still send the audio signal to the tv via composite/component as well?

So I'll have to turn my volume down or mute my tv to use JUST the A40's?

yes you can.

I actually have my tv's in built speakers disabled, my foxtel box's audio sent to a sound system and the only audio coming from my xbox is being sent to my A40's via the digital audio, I also have audio from it being sent to the tv via HDMI but since the speakers are disabled it means nothing. I also have the opportunity through an AV switcher to have the 360 audio go through my sound system but i rarely use that.

there are many many combinations you can set up.

Yes. USB cable included you'll just need to purchase the optical cable seperately.

Sorry to double post (phone doesn't let me edit) but to amend that USB is included with mixamp.
