I use an hdmi cable to hook up my xbox to my tv. Is it possible to use the optical cable with an hdmi hookup or would i have to downgrade to the standard xbox cable in order to use it? And does the optical cable really enhance the sound that greatly that i should sacrifice picture quality for sound quality?

You posted the same question/thread in the main "Welcome Mat" forum. Please don't post multiple topics of the same nature in various places as it just spams the forum.

If you already have an xbox HDAV adapter you can just remove the shell which would give plenty of room for the HDMI cable.

You can use HDMI and the Optical Audio, that is the set up I use. Place the adapter that has the AV/ Optical Audio ports into the xbox, then connect the Fiber Optic Cable directly between that and your MixAmp. There is no need to plug the AV cables in, so you will use the HDMI and be running fiber optic audio directly into your Mix Amp.

If you wish to have the Fiber Optic Audio running through your TV speakers (if you have that option) instead of connecting the optic cable to your mix amp, find the port in the back of your tv.

With the microsoft HDMI kit you get an audio adapter that has a digital audio out.

Hi mw2 pro,

Like Warblade suggested, please keep your threads to one category at a time. Thanks!

An optical cable would provide the best sound for you MixAmp and A40's because it'll be taking true Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound signals. As for your optical setup, you can use you TV for optical out and the signal should be exactly the same coming out of your Xbox 360. There may be a small, hardly noticeable delay as the signal is being pushed through another device.

Generally, it's always better to have any signal go directly from the output to the input. like the Xbox 360 to our MixAmp in this case. Like the other awesome ASTRO peeps pointed out, there is an HDMI AV cable for the Xbox 360 that is available at Amazon:

Amazon: Xbox 360 HDMI AV Cable (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-HDMI-AV-Cable/dp/B000UODATY)

Xbox.com - Xbox 360 HDMI Cable (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360hdmiavcable/)

Hope this helps!

I honestly don't understand why they couldn't just throw an optical connection directly into the back with their HDMI model. Other than to con you out of more money.

It did come included with the Xbox 360 Elite but they took it out due to saving more money. All Arcade, Discontinued 60GB and Elite models do not include the HDMI Optical Adapter anymore.

You have two choices,
- Purchase the Xbox 360 HDMI with Opical Adapter
- Complain to Microsoft Support (Like I did) and they should send you one through the post

Well for me I am using the VGA cable + optical, as I don't have an HDMI enabled 360. If I ever upgraded I would just gut it or the HDAV Component that came with it.

Won't be too long probably though, my 3 year old 360 got its first RROD and free repair a little before its warranty expired. I have been extremely lucky with it in terms of it surviving the odds. Especially considering getting a RROD doesn't really count on how well you treat it though keeping it in an enclosed space expedites its demise.

I was able to buy just the adapter part for $15.00 shipped from eforcity.com.
Hope that helps. It sure beats the hell out of paying %50.00 for an overpriced HDMI cable that you most likely already have.
