Ok so i dont use a receiver at all but i run my cable to my tv via hdmi and also my xbox to my tv via hdmi. I have the optical out on my tv hooked to the mixamp and i get sound when watching tv however i do not get it when playing on the xbox. If i connect the optical directly to my xbox it works but i want to use my a40's when watching tv/movies as well. Any help would be appreciated. When i move in a few months ill be getting a receiver again and do it that way however until then i need to try and make this work. I know i could get a 2nd optical cable and make it work but that is defeating the purpose of what i want to do.
Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.
I will also say that the sound out of these are just crazy clean and crisp. Ive hooked it directly to my xbox to try it out and its amazing what you can hear now and how precise it is.

Sounds like your setup should work, as you're able to get sound out of the optical port on your TV while running your cable box...
One option you could do is to use an optical switch.

hey man i have the same setup as you do. try turning up the game volume on the xbox. or check your settings on the tv to make sure the audio output volume is fine. it should work, sounds like you have everything set up right.

Hey,
Try changing the Digital output to Dolby Digital without WMA Pro.
My Xbox > System Settings > Console Settings > Audio Settings. It should be under Dolby Digital 5.1.
If you have WMA Pro on your TV might try to output in DTS (Doubt it) although it is worth a shot.

Yeah i have it set as Just the Dolby Digital 5.1. The sound plays through my tv so i know its making it to the tv however its not being sent or passed out through the Digital Out of the TV. Not sure what is going on. Does the xbox do the HDCP HDMI encryption? If so could that be the issue that there isnt anything to decode it.

do you have your xbox sound settings to the right one?

It does use HDCP on certain applications although that shouldn't stop it.
Have you checked the menu options in the Television Settings, look somewhere in the sound settings to see if there is a manual overwrite.
On the Samsung's you have to manually check Dolby Digital Out which mutes the TV and puts 5.1 through the Optical Port.

There is a wire you can buy for the Xbox 360 that is an HDMI cable with a optical input. So you can just plug the HDMI into the TV and the optical cable into the Xbox and Mixamp. But i would suggest this as a last resort since the problem is most likely a simple fix when you find it.
